The NSW Government’s Veterans Employment Program has exceeded expectations, doubling employment targets over the last year.

Acting Minister for Veterans Geoff Lee said the program helped 519 former defence force personnel find jobs within the public sector.

“The program has exceeded its yearly target of 250 jobs and is assisting veterans make what can be a very difficult transition from military to civilian life,” Mr Lee said.

“Veterans are applying the skills and expertise gained during their time in the military, to their new roles within the NSW Government.

“This fantastic program has helped 1,350 veterans secure employment since 2016.”

Australian Army veteran Justin Blacker-Quin, who served in Afghanistan, said the Veterans Employment Program gave him skills to secure work.

“Gaining employment can be difficult outside of defence, in particular trying to gain a job that you feel comfortable and financially secure in,” Mr Blacker-Quin said.

“Education is the key to bridging the gap from service to public employment and the program helped me secure my Policy Officer role in the NSW Government.”

The NSW Veterans Employment Program was the first of its kind in Australia and has now been rolled-out across the country following its success.

Approximately 1,200 personnel transition out of the Australian Defence Force into NSW each year. The NSW Government is the largest veterans employer in the State.

Parliamentary Secretary for Veterans James Griffin said the program educates employers about the skills veterans can bring to the workforce.

“Our veterans have strong leadership and teamwork capabilities, they are adaptable and trainable and can bring success to any workplace.” Mr Griffin said.
