REDFERN ENERGISED WITH NEW SOCIAL HOUSING

An 18-storey apartment complex in the heart of Redfern will increase the supply of social and affordable housing and provide stable accommodation for vulnerable people in close proximity to public transport and services.

Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Services Gareth Ward said construction is underway on the 160-apartment project that the NSW Government is supporting St George Community Housing (SGCH) to deliver with Lendlease.

“We are committed to increasing the supply of social housing for vulnerable people in our community, while also providing increased opportunities and a better experience for tenants,” Mr Ward said. “This development also has excellent access to public transport, employment, education and services, and will provide tenants with access to supports tailored to their individual needs.”

The energy-efficient complex on the former City of Sydney depot site will feature ground floor commercial space, a community hub and an SGCH management office. It will have an eight-star energy rating, providing increased thermal comfort and reduced household energy costs.

SGCH Group CEO Scott Langford said the development forms part of the organisation’s 560-property portfolio of projects delivered through the NSW Government’s Social and Affordable Housing Fund (SAHF).

“This project will provide an important piece of social infrastructure in a high demand location. We have shared this vision with the NSW Government, City of Sydney and project financiers Clean Energy Finance Corporation,” Mr Langford said.

Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore said the City would continue to use innovative levers to increase supply of social and affordable housing.

"When we decommissioned a Council depot in Redfern, we sold the site to SGCH at a discounted market rate to enable the project," Lord Mayor Clover Moore said. “We will continue to provide land for investment in social and affordable housing to ensure that people on low incomes, and key workers such as teachers and nurses, have a place to call home in a diverse and inclusive city.”

The SAHF is on track to deliver more than 3,400 homes across NSW with upwards of 2,000 units already complete or under construction.
