NSW Labor demands more tax collectors and less relief for households and businesses

While the NSW Government is helping households and businesses manage their tax debt, Labor’s Shadow Treasurer Daniel Mookhey has today called on the Government to aggressively ramp up tax collection.
 
To support the community to manage the impacts of COVID-19 and natural disasters, the NSW Government has deferred payment timeframes for many taxes by up to six months. Households and business are also being supported though interest relief for customers who agree to enter a repayment plan based on their individual circumstances.
 
Minister for Finance Damien Tudehope said the NSW Government makes no apologies for making concessions to assist households and businesses during these unprecedented times.
 
“More than $133,000,000 worth of tax related debts are being resolved on payment plans. These measures are designed with the customer as the highest priority.” Mr Tudehope said.
 
“As a modern and customer-centric government, we are committed to supporting people to manage their debts based on their individual circumstances including in cases of financial hardship.”
 
NSW Labor’s Shadow Treasurer today called on Government to implement a new strategy to reduce these tax related debts through more aggressive tax collection saying “NSW literally can’t afford a Government without a strategy to collect this money.”
 
While the NSW Government is the only state to hold two AAA credit ratings, with one recently reaffirmed with Moody’s, Labor’s Shadow Treasurer is evidently relying on aggressive tax collection strategies to fund his election commitments to Mark Morey and Alex Claassens.
 
All debt resolution options with Revenue NSW are voluntary and are chosen by the customer, taking into account their personal situation.
