NSW Labor recycles NSW Government commitment

NSW Labor has set a target to favour local rail manufacturing as their first election commitment, but has failed to commit to a broader domestic goal.

Minister for Transport, Veterans and Western Sydney David Elliott said not only is the NSW Government committed to local content for rail manufacturing, it’s delivering domestic goals across the State’s transport infrastructure projects.

“I made a commitment to manufacturing more future transport infrastructure in Australia, and we have followed through with our commitments. This is nothing but empty promises from the Leader of the Opposition,” Mr Elliott said.

“The NSW Opposition has a proven track record of failing to deliver local content on our train network, the current Waratah fleet that serves Sydney commuters every day was ordered back in 2006 under a Labor Government and was predominantly built in China.”

“It has taken a NSW Coalition Government to rebuild NSW after the failings of the previous Labor Government. The NSW Coalition Government has $178 billion worth of projects delivered since we came to power in 2011.”
We are delivering the following locally made transport infrastructure:

Light Rail

  • Australian manufacturing content will be a requirement for Stage 2 of the Parramatta Light Rail to ensure infrastructure projects lift local economies and create new jobs onshore.
  • The Sydney Light Rail project has used more than 8,000 tonnes of local steel alone.

Zero Emission Buses
  • In a huge win for Western Sydney, Custom Denning at St Marys was awarded a contract to design, manufacture and assemble 79 new electric buses (ZEBS), under a $70 million investment in zero emission technology.
Australian Steel
  • The NSW Government is the largest purchaser of Australian steel in the nation – strongly supporting our local steel industry, local jobs, and the delivery of roads, rail and other Transport infrastructure – in fact:
  • The Sydney Light Rail project utilised 8,000 tonnes of steel alone, and 7,000 tonnes for the Northwest Metro.
  • 91 per cent of steel on Sydney Metro City & Southwest has been sourced in Australia.
  • The western tunneling package for Sydney Metro West - more than 95 per cent (21,000 tonnes) Structural Steel is Australian manufactured.
  • While the central tunneling package on Sydney Metro West - over 90 per cent Structural Steel is Australian manufactured.

The NSW Government will continue to support local manufacturing, local jobs and our world-class public transport network.
